DISCRETION, SERIOUSNESS AND RELIABILITY


York Prince of Schaumburg - Lippe is the great-great-grandson of the Count of Lippe ancestor Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe, whose leadership was able to safeguard Portugal’s independence in the “Fantastic War” of 1762. 
Who, in the service of the Kingdom of Portugal, reorganized the Portuguese army and sponsored the construction of Portugal's border defenses, including the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in Elvas.



Conde de Lippe was nominated to be commander-in-chief of the Portuguese troops, with the mission to save the Kingdom of Portugal of the Spanish and French invasions.

Conde de Lippe, established a war and artillery school, donating the land in Ajuda for this construction, reformed the Portuguese army, developed and rebuilt strategic Forts in Portugal to increase the defense and gave order to built Forte da Graça in Elvas.

After France and Spain attacked Portugal in 1761, the leading minister, the great reformer margrave of Pombal, entrusted William the supreme command of the allied British and Portuguese troops. 



In 1762 William ward off the invasion of Spanish troops and saved Portugal´s independence. In Portugal this incident is still known as the so called „Fantastic War“ (Guerra Fantastica). He established a war and artillery school and reformed the Portuguese army. Furthermore he gave the order to built the Fort Nossa Senhora da Graça in vein of Vauban near Elvas, which the king named „Fort de Lippe“ to honour his duties.
